October 10, 2024 / đŸ„Ą Search in basic text/email/phone Fields, People Field, Space Setup 2.0, and more

Today’s release has many quality of life improvement and one major experimental change for creators.

Search in basic text/email/phone Fields

Special for @cire12, @Matt_Blais, @JoelH, @Eugene_Vabishchevich, @JMaynier, @uniquelau and so many other people.

Now search supports all basic text fields, including Basic Text, Email, Phone and URL. It unfolds some new use cases:

  • Search for people by Phone or Email, useful for Hiring and any other CRM process.
  • Search for specific identifiers, like UUIDs, MAC addresses, shipment IDs, serial numbers and other unique identifiers stored in text fields.

NOTE: Phone search has some limitations, for example, if you type 12345678, then all numbers which contain spaces 123 45 768, brackets 1(23)45678 or hyphens 123-45-678 will be missed in search.

People Field

Special for @radek, @v3j and many other people.

Previously, there were two ways to capture assigned people:

  • Assignments: discoverable and easy to set up, but cannot be renamed, added multiple times, or restricted to a single assignee per entity.
  • Relation to User DB: flexible when it comes to multiple Fields and assignees, but doesn’t support out-of-the-box notifications, and is tricky to set up.

people-field

Introducing People Field, the best of both worlds: flexible and easy to set up. Multiple developers and a single QA work on Features and should be notified when assigned? Added two People Fields, problem solved :sunglasses:.

Unless things go terribly wrong, in one of the next updates we’ll convert existing Assignments Fields into People Fields so you can rename and configure them.

Experimental: Space Setup 2.0

Special for @Yuri_BC and @ihartrafimovich

New Space Setup released today as an experimental feature (enable it in Settings → Experimental Lab). In this re-design we tried to solve numerous problems, like People don’t differentiate between view and database clearly, space with 8+ databases looks ugly, etc. It is all about clarity, unification and focus.

Main changes:

  • Left sidebar is introduced that contains all databases and all relevent areas inside databases (Data, Fields, Relations, Rules, Views, etc)
  • Space setup is focused now, so when you jump to it the left sidebar is completely replaced with the space setup sidebar.
  • No new functionality added :muscle:.

Please try it and share your frustration, cortisol and dopamine (together with nice improvements ideas).

Whiteboard: Copy and paste styles between objects

Special for @Mircea_Braescu

If you want to reuse a particular style you’ve applied to an object, you can copy and paste it between layers. To copy and apply formatting, use the shortcuts Cmd + Opt + C and Cmd + Opt + V (for Mac) / Ctrl + Alt + C and Ctrl + Alt + V (for Windows), or click the three dots on the text context menu and choose the option. You can use this process to copy fill, stroke, and text properties.

Relation View improvements

Special for @YvetteLans and other people

We’ve fixed several problems related to pinned relation views and moved views selection into the tabs row. Here is the list of improvements:

  • Search input weirdly overlaps Field Name and View selector when expanded and truncates Name.
  • If many Views are pinned, second row of Tabs appears (while selection is displayed incorrectly).
  • Field name and View names truncate disproportionally when scaled.
  • If Name gets truncated while hovering, it does not reset to full after mouse leaves hovered area.
  • Number is added to the More views selector

“Open in panel” action in the left sidebar

Special for @antoniokov

Now you can open entities and views in the new panel from the left sidebar. Click
and find Open in a new panel action.

Re-order pinned filters

Now you can re-order filters (and pinned filters as a result). Just drag and drop a filter in Filters menu.

:butterfly: Other Improvements

  • Guests are now called Observers. These are still users you invite free of charge to view and comment on any level: Space, Database, or individual Entity. Typically, these are your colleagues who don’t use Fibery as their primary work platform (yet :smiling_imp:) but need to stay in the loop. Proper guests—external parties who you invite to collaborate on individual tasks and projects—are coming later this year.
  • Whiteboard:
    • Remember last selected database in search popup for current opened whiteboard, it speeds up new entity creation on a whiteboard (special for @Mircea_Braescu).
    • When a whiteboard is opened and the user’s viewport is empty, automatically adjust the view to fit the screen if there is any content on the whiteboard.
  • Only gpt-4o and gpt-4o-mini can be used in AI automations, old models are completely removed and migrated to new.

:shrimp: Fixed Bugs

  • Integrations: ‘Configure’ and ‘Edit fields’ pop-up sometimes do not load on click
  • Integrations: wrong color for Relation field and database on Edit fields screen
  • Notifications: Click on notification from Integrations leads to ‘not found page’ while space settings or integration pop-up is expected
  • Notifications: User receives a notification about broken rule if he lost updateType capability
  • Missing ‘Close’ button for highlight pop-up
  • Duplicated quick filters should not be linked and should work independently
  • Lists: Select entity with a single click when focus is in new input
  • Automations: Broken formulas in Append, Prepend and Overwrite actions after importing templates
  • No tooltip is shown when hover on relation view selector

P.S. Share your thoughts, hugs, hearts and wishes.

With  and care, Fibery Team.

Remarkable improvements. :rocket: :fire: It’s funny that just yesterday my client and I were struggling with the need to search for contacts by phone number. And today an update with this feature has already been released. “Experimental: Space Setup 2.0” is very useful

Awesome to see the assignment/user field get streamlined, it always bothered me.

As per usual, my favorite update is the one I wasn’t expecting
Having “open in new panel” as an option is incredibly helpful!

Sometimes I want to change the order of the panels though, or look at 2 specific panels side by side without having to close the one that is in between them. Could you add a “Switch side” or “Shift panel left/right” option to the panel actions menu?

It’s probably unrelated to the logic used in the global search, but in the relation view search, could you add the ability to search the “name” of any field related/referenced to the entities?

I’ve requested this before here but never got a response so not sure if it’s a realistic/viable ask.

I do really like it, it just little overwhelming (maybe because I have a lot of databases) that the levels need to be expanded collapsed independently from each other. My suggestion is to auto expand the submenu for each database as well as auto collapse any database that isn’t the active one so you can only really be editing one database at a time. Or maybe this is finally the moment an “expand/collapse all levels” action gets prioritized? :crossed_fingers:

Also, now that views menu is a little more streamlined and cohesive with the rest of the space/database settings, can there be an option for dedicated views to not be automatically listed within the space in the left sidebar? 95% of the time we use a dedicated view, it’s for a one-time use case or something I would be happy to favorite/bookmark to easily find later, but I don’t want to have them clutter up our left menu. Even if it is a view I know I will use again later, I usually delete it because I don’t want users getting confused by things in the menu that aren’t particularly relevant to them.

Some awesome updates in there.
While for me the copy-paste of styles between items will make the most difference, for the rest of our team the “search in basic text fields” might have the biggest impact.
Now we’ll no longer have to use workarounds such as task names being formulas of “title field + UUID” and people will be able to just search by UUID

Awesome release again :heart_eyes::heart_eyes:

Thanks! It’s really clean and clear now! Great job

Wow, really looking forward to this change! Would it then be possible to work with customers in Fibery? That’s a real game changer for my clients (and as a Fibery partner, for us too while building a workpace for a client )

This is a pretty amazing update! Regarding the new Space Setup approach, I continue to think that you need more clear signaling about where the heck you are at when you get into this view because it looks so similar to the normal view. Sure, it’s hard to get in here “accidentally”, and it follows Fibery UI conventions like back button at top. But honestly it’s all so subtle and deemphasized. While experienced Fibery Admins will probably be fine, I see no reason not to do at least one of, and possibly all of the following:

  1. Put some kind of super clear indicator where you are at top, like above the current name of the space, some non-clickable text title “Configuring Space” just as a title
  2. Make the Back button and the name of the Workspace not so insanely subtle! It should probably say something like “Back to Workspace: name” or just “Back to [workspacename]”
  3. “Share” should probably more clearly say “Share this Space”

In addition I think the “Databases” title should be bigger. Someone commented on this before, why is it smaller than the DB names themselves since it’s clearly a Title of a Section?

Also consider some way to better label or distinguish Synced DBs. In my case I have Google Calendar synced. It has 4 DBs inside it. It is beneath “Databases” (below “New Database”), with its own hierarchy but it’s just labeled “Google Calendar”, so it’s slightly unclear what it is. If you look at the “Databases” title it’s in the same (smaller) font as “Google Calendar”, so you can get it, of course. But I think this can and should be clearer if they’re already going to be separated.

I’m excited to see updates to the AI. Does this mean the AI assistant trained on workspace data is coming soon?

I’m encourages to see so many quality of life updates across the board!

So far we’ve stopped AI assistant improvements. The only AI feature we are working on is generate Automation Rules, and we also improving Semantic Search

Wow! Massive update in terms of UX improvements:

  1. People Field → This seems great, love that we now can structure the assignments. Looking forward to it all migrating.
  2. Copy and paste whiteboard styles → very nice improvement
  3. Observers → Very nice and clear now, keen to see the new Guests coming in
  4. Space Setup 2.0 → Great improvement making the whole screen more scalable. Thanks

On the Space Setup I will echo @Oshyan about making the “config nature of the screen more obvious”. I have to and want to give my team
members Creator rights for certain spaces and sadly some still fail to realise that this is a config screen as they ask me why the table doesn’t show all elements. Yes, there is an indicator saying that it’s just a preview. But I think part is because for them clicking in the space immediately opens the config (which is great for me), and there should be maybe more friction of clicking on “config space” instead.

I think the new sidebar will help
making it clear that this is a different mode, but if we can make it a bit more explicit, that would be good.

Thanks!

I’ve added a feature for that, we’ll see what we can do

But if they are needed just for you, why not create such Views in My Space?

Awesome! If I understand the description correctly, it’s not clear yet how to collaborate with customers, right? Can you already share some thoughts or is it too early for that?

Will be released next week
