🧠 Feedback needed: Space Setup redesign prototype

Request: Ability to group databases (collapsible sections or folders):
It would be very helpful to be able to group databases. I often spend time finding out where the databases are that belong together. Although they are part of the same space, it can quickly become messy and requires manually ordering to maintain insight in what belongs together. This is the first and only need I actually have with regard to the redesign, the rest for me is secondary.

Or ‘tagging’ of databases and a tag filter at the top

Should go live next week

Released as experimental today, try it and provide your improvement ideas.

October 10, 2024 / 🥡 Search in basic text/email/phone Fields, People Field, Space Setup 2.0, and more

This is great! :grinning:

Suggestions:

  • In the left panel, the top line that displays the current Space name: make this a dropdown to select a different Space.
  • For Rules & Buttons: in the left panel, add to context menu: “Enable/Disable”
  • For Rules: in the left panel, add to Rule context menu: “Run Now”
  • For Fields in right panel (plus everywhere else in Fibery that displays all Fields of a DB): double-click field name to Edit the field.

Oooooh, nice.

I tried the experimental space layout while trying to refactor some heavily interwoven relations in a medium large space (~20 databases) yesterday. While I still think the new layout is on the right track to a better structure, I have to admit, that switching between databases was easier with the old “tabbed” layout than finding the correct line in a list of >200 entries where the only hint is the small colored box in front of it. I found myself searching the list quite often.
I’m not sure I have a real suggestion for solving this, but maybe the contents of other databases other than the one I am editing right now is not as relevant, so maybe a “dropdown” variant like for the spaces shown above could be helpful for database navigation as well? For comparing two database automation lists, for example, one could still open two separate browser tabs.

I am not sure I get it, you have 200 databases in some Space? Could you share a screenshot of this problem?

The 200 entries refer to the 20 spaces with expanded menus. Every expanded database spawns at least 7 entries (“Data”, “Fields”, “Relations”, and so on) and if some automations are defined, even more. This means that the menu items where I want to go next (different database) are more difficult to find and are spread over multiple screen viewports in the long, scrolling list. Instead of the always visible “tab bar” of the old design.

Yes I agree, it is faster to switch between databases in the old layout.

Agree too, it is easier on the current version. The Space Setup 2.0 brings a little bit more confusion because there is too much expanded menu on my opinion. But I like the idea of this feature, it is more a question of finding the right balance in UI.

What about creating another sub-menu ? Currently you have a Databases expandable menu. Create another one for Settings. So the Databases does not expand and a new section is created below the Databases.

The settings will represent the current selected Database. Highlight the selected database so that the current selected Database is clearly visible.

The problem is valid, but so far we did not find a good solution. Main goal of this re-design is to help newcomers to understand and find building blocks, but it indeed causes more clicks for experienced users. We will think…

Please consider my suggestion from the other topic about allowing only 1 database to be expanded at at time, so it won’t be possible for users to be overwhelmed by multiple expanded lists for multiple databases.

Yeah, we are going to try it, but not sure it will be enough.
