Removing single select selection from entity

I can’t figure out why I’m unable to remove a single-select selection from an entity in one of my fields. In a dummy single-select field I created, I see an “x” to remove the selection (Screenshot 1). In the other single-select field, there’s no “x” visible. The field settings for both fields are the same as far as I can tell.
