I’m not sure when this changed, but it seems that ESC used to close panels but now it’s Shift-ESC.
Sadly, Shift-ESC on Firefox opens the process tools and I can’t close panels.
Can this be configured, somehow?

I’ve just experienced this as well, and I think there’s a bit more to it than even the shortcut key (which I agree is a little tricky with Firefox).
I think perhaps the “root” of the issue is that clicking to open a panel does NOT give the new panel cursor focus. You’ll notice that clicking a new panel leaves the focus ‘ring’ on the ‘source’ panel.
From this state, pressing Shift+ESC doesn’t work, as it brings up the process manager in Firefox.
However, clicking anywhere on the new panel (giving it focus) NOW lets you Shift+ESC to close it.
So perhaps a workaround would be to give the new panel focus? I would expect it to have it in most situations anyways, so … win win?
I also wish it was only “ESC” (not +Shift) that closed the panel, but if that was a recent change then I’m sure there’s some reason it was made that we’re not aware of.
