Past data shows real done dates, future data shows estimated done dates. Having a clear line in between would help understand the graph better.

This is definitely helpful (at least in my experience) in allowing the viewer/consumer of a report to visually decide where to look in the shortest amount of time possible, reducing false readings/decisions, and there increasing adoption and consumption of reports across an organisation to make decisions.
I usually call them references (milestones), since they are basically usually-constant-and-global reference points on the axis of a time or numerical series. And depending on the reporting tool they can be represented as points on an axis, a line across it, or even a shaded (low opacity) band across the axis if the reference is a range.
But for example Google Analytics calls them annotations, which are points along the axis. Tableau calls them reference lines and bands, since annotations are something else in Tableau.
Here are some of my examples from past uses, all of which are meant as a visual aid to the person reading the reports.

I’m honestly playing more and more with reports right now than I usually do, but check this out:
Setting annotations on specific dates is possible (although not from a database, its hardcoded into the report)
And annotations on the Y axis also seem to be possible, but I haven’t gotten to using them use them yet. But I think it’s in line with what you’re asking for!
