[REJECTED] Option to Hide Folder Name in Smart Folders

Smart folders are nice, but sometimes it makes sense to show the entities just under each other and not inside a folder.

Before and after:

The only option is not create a folder then  Overall such complications are against our way of doing things

It would still be technically a folder, but just the UI wouldn’t look as much like a folder.

Similar to what was done in the past with Smart Sections.

The pain point here is situation where:

  1. There is only one item in the smart folder (for guests, for example).
  2. There only a smart folder in the space. Then there’s no need for the extra hierarchy.

Maybe others can think of other scenarios.

Maybe even a toggle for “Open by Default” could be enough…? Still I think a nicer ui for it might be better, but it would stay within the “Folder” ideology then.

If there is no element in the sidebar that represents the smart folder, where would you imagine the configuration of which entities to show and how (levels, filters, sorting, etc.) would be accessed?

Or do you just mean that you would like to be able to add specific entities to the sidebar, one at a time?

I see two options:

  1. At the bottom of the list a “Settings” item
  2. When turning on “Architect mode” (showing databases), it shows the title of the smart folder with the config button as it does at the moment.

@RonMakesSystems This request is very similar to some of my ideas in this thread: Allow smart folders/sections to be nested inside of other smart folders/sections

Primarily:

  • Any Space should be configurable to behave as a smart folder itself, so we’re not required to add folders to display entities directly underneath it.
  • Any Entity should be able to behave as a smart “folder” itself that context filters anything underneath it. I’m thinking this is somewhat similar to levels in a smart folder, only with a way to separate/label those levels as smart folders.

Like you, I also dislike that if I want to list and filter any entities in the sidebar, they need to be in a folder, but often the folder just becomes an extra useless level.

Like, we have a space called “Clients” and a database called clients and I want to just list all “active” client entities directly under the space, but instead we have to have a smart folder called “Client List” that requires an additional click to expand.
