PDFs on the Whiteboard

Hi guys,
It’s good to see your progress on the whiteboard.

We love the commenting feature and that comments resize with images - awesome stuff! This was not available when we first considered Fibery.

I have a whole bunch of nice-to-have ideas which I’d like to post separately, but only a few really must-have’s. The first one is to have PDF import support.

Like most design agencies, we distribute drawings in PDF format. We’d like to share the whiteboard as a sort-of client mark-up canvas. It’s a bit of a pain to create image files of every PDF just to be able to load them on the Fibery whiteboard.

Best,
Hendrik

Hi Hendrik, we’re planning to expand support for upload formats on the whiteboard soon. Regarding the PDF case in your situation is it meant to be each page separately one by one or a preview block with scrolling?

Hey Alex,

I think for now just to be able to import PDF’s like we do images currently would be great. But it is critical to have comment positions retained when the PDF element is moved or resized - again, just like with images (whoever did that genius move is already on our Christmas list).

Could you clarify what you mean by a ‘preview block with scrolling’?

I have a specific way in mind to use the whiteboard as a shared collaborative space. It’s a bit of a hack and a bit clunky but it seems to be only way to get a setup where we have a big-picture environment where clients can intelligently markup at specific targets. Basically we’ll have a current (PDF) drawing in a section and when this is superseded we will (manually) reduce its’ size and place it in a ‘superseded’ section and replace the PDF with the updated (current) version.

Really the ideal is to have each PDF associated with an entity (perhaps have the entity fields the same width as the PDF at the bottom (or perhaps a popup?). Then the drawing issues could be handled using the database.

I am going to grab this opportunity to share some other things I might also issue individually as feature requests (for voting) but hope I can use this opportunity to share some of these in the context of our use case.

The idea of a ‘whiteboard database’ the way Fibery are at least partially doing it (partially because there is so much more potential here!), is so powerful to me. I don’t think anybody has truly done whiteboards in this way (I know Clickup also does this to some degree and a few others are starting to do this). Most of these whiteboard apps have a few graphic icons and arrows from the 90’s and visual symbols with no intelligence . We need a whiteboard with intelligence! Thank you for starting that Fibery!

You got my attention. Any here are my votes.

  1. EMBED IFRAMES
It would be great for us to be able to embed iframes in the whiteboard. We can do this on docs but then there is no way to add a comments field in a doc… A doc offers so much, except… collaboration. So the whiteboard is our interim solution.
1.1 Ok, I get that ‘live’ views might be an issue on the whiteboard in a sense supposedly because they change all the time (?) But what about if we could screen-grab that iFrame, automatically make it an entry in a DB and list it as an entity on the board which we could markup… (am I asking too much or dreaming too big?)
  2. EMBED OTHER FIBERY VIEWS
Would love to be able to embed other views on the whiteboard, like a timeline (or gantt chart), table etc. Basically using it as a big canvas that can hold database information in any format ‘for anything and everything’. I am sure there are technical limitations I am not aware about, just saying what would be ideal for us. This is the pipedream.
  3. INTELLIGENT TEXT
Smartsuite has a text element on their whiteboard which could come from a table… awesome.

Off my chest that is.
And looking forward to what’s coming!
