I think the “World” integation was released before the Location field came out. I think it would make a lot of sense to have the coordinates of the countries as a location field in the integration. Then when we relate items to a country, we can also also pull the geolocation of the country, and show the items on a map.
A location field’s co-ordinates describe a single point on the globe. What would you imagine the co-ordinates for a country should be? The latitude and longitude of the country’s parliament building? The monarch’s residence?
Haha, just the coordinates that get set when you type the country name in google maps or mapbox. They have some algorithm that gets the center point I think.
Like this is what I mean:
You can select just a country in the location field.
And the json is like this under the hood:
{“longitude”:-2.36967,“latitude”:54.237933,“fullAddress”:“United Kingdom”,“addressParts”:{“country”:“United Kingdom”}}
I think the easiest thing to do (until we implement that) is to add a Location field, and then update it yourself to whatever is the name of the country (I recommend using AI to save yourself the manual work
)
Giving the AI this api endpoint seemed to work really well!! https://restcountries.com/v3.1/name/{Country_Name}
Thanks Chris!
FYI I didn’t actually need to assist the AI with any pointers - I just told it to set the Location field based on the Name of the country, and it worked perfectly without any other help.
Fair! Mine asked where it should get the info from, so I gave it the API. I’ve had situation where the AI added flag emojis to countries (without the integration) and it was way off. (Gave The Netherlands the Finland flag for some reason). So I just get a bit worried with hallucinations, thought this would be more accurate.
