Hi guys,

**LOVING** the whiteboard so much since you’ve added commenting feature!

Please allow mouse wheel zoom instead of mouse wheel scroll up-down default or clicking ctrl + mw. It seems more natural on an open canvas to zoom in and out, instead of having an up-down bias.

My prediction is that this whiteboard will get Fibery a lot of business. It’s a gateway drug for us creatives.

Best,
Hendrik

Are you saying that Ctrl + mouse wheel does not zoom the whiteboard for you? Or are you saying that you want the current defaults reversed?

Not reporting that zoom is not working with ctrl and mouse wheel - it is.
I don’t know if I am asking to have defaults revered - did not know there are two things to reverse / swap. [EDIT] I think I have assumed that scrolling may not be required if zooming is effective (might be wrong about that)
I would like to be able to zoom with the wheel without the requirement to press another key.

I think there are enough people who want to use the wheel to pan or to zoom, that one of these functions will require a modifier key.
At the moment, zooming requires Ctrl, and panning requires no-key.

I suspect that if we made zooming the no-key option, then we would upset users who like things the way they are (or are at least familiar/comfortable with them).

🤷

Hi Chris,
It’s not possible to pan with the scroll wheel and so panning does not compete with the scroll wheel at all. _Clicking_ the middle mouse button does that perfectly for us without [keyboard]-aid 👍

Scrolling is of course an entirely different function offered by the mouse. At the moment Fibery scrolls like it would a webpage - in one axis. This is counter-intuitive for a board with two axes.

Zooming out and zooming in on a large canvas quickly is extremely effective and intuitive with the wheel.

Hope that makes sense now.

That’s weird. For me, rolling the mouse wheel causes the whiteboard to scroll vertically.
And with my particular mouse, I can ‘rock’ the mouse wheel left and right to scroll the whiteboard horizontally.
Neither of these require a click or an extra key.

If I click the wheel (= middle button) then the cursor turns to a hand (clenched fist), and I can drag the whiteboard (= panning?)

Is ‘panning’ something different to ‘scrolling’ (with more granularity) as far as you’re concerned? Perhaps we are using language differently?

Yes.
Apologies, I realised that as soon as I put down the phone.
I have the same behaviour as you are describing. I think panning is usually not referred to as scrolling [in] common graphics applications. Scrolling is normally in a single axis.

Miro is a good example of an effective implementation of the scroll wheel zoom.

it would have been more correct to write

Anyway, I think it’s unlikely that we will swap (no-key) vertical scrolling for zooming, but maybe if this gets a loads of votes, we’ll reconsider.

Miro is trying to identify the device used for interactions on the whiteboard, we’ll do something similar, but not right now.

Not to conflate issues, I am just talking about the scroll-zoom function in the browser.
But thank you. Looking forward to having this option.

It boggles my mind that anyone would prefer vertical scroll as the primary interaction with the whiteboard via mouse wheel. The vast majority of mice don’t have side-to-side motion on the wheel, so in most mouse configurations/capabilities it means you can only move in 1 axis using the wheel. Surely that is of minimal real utility as you inevitably need to switch to a different interaction to move sideways (in some views a modifier key allows the wheel to also control sideways movement; if you keep the current setup it’s worth thinking about adding that). _Especially_ when you can click the wheel and then use Pan in any direction without jumps, etc. (i.e. fluidly, with far greater control).

I think it depends on what background you have. A lot of the sw tools I use have scroll as default and zoom requiring a key modifier, so I prefer it this way because of muscle memory 🤷

But if we offer the option (as @alex mentioned) we can possibly please everyone 🤞

Sure, same for me. It’s just that single-axis movement is nonsensical in a whiteboard context (to me). It’s the same thing as being on a regular web page, where scrolling up/down is natural and makes sense, then switching to Google Maps and now if I could only move up/down on the map with the wheel it would be incredibly frustrating. Same “tool”, different page, different context, different expectations. Now it makes more sense that wheel = zoom.

Surely your expectations of input interactions depend on the context/needs of the app, right? Like if you ever use 3D software I wouldn’t imagine you’d expect the mouse wheel to, I dunno, move the view up and down _only_, right? And do you end up building your whiteboards in a more up-down arrangement as a result?

Actually, I think my muscle memory (that zooming involves use of Ctrl key) overrides any contextual expectations I might have. So it kicks in and I just naturally use Ctrl key.
It’s not so much that I love being able to use the mouse wheel to pan/scroll, without having to use a key - in fact I seldom do that. When I want to pan, I often use the space key as a modifier and move the mouse around 🤷

That’s an apt comparison.
A bit of an interface paradigm shift is required working in 2 axis instead of a scrolling screen in 1 axis.

Figma had a similar issue for over a year, since designers mostly use touchpads or mice with both vertical and horizontal scrolling, they eventually added a separate option for this. We’ll be adding similar settings soon.

Really looking forward to that option!
Even with embedded whiteboards on dashboards, it should be immediately obvious to a user (client in my case) how to engage with the canvas, whereas the vertical scroll just lets things fly by in what seems like a static view. It is confusing.

I completely support this suggestion to use the mouse wheel for zooming in Fibery Whiteboard, and I’d like to add a few points to reinforce your request:

- I work as an architect and project coordinator, using software like Revit, Blender, Archicad, and Navisworks. All these programs use the mouse wheel for zooming by default. Whenever I switch between these tools and Fibery’s Whiteboard, the difference in behavior is confusing and constantly breaks my workflow.

- Fibery’s current default (vertical scrolling) makes sense for text documents or web pages, where there isn’t horizontal navigation or frequent zooming. But on a free, open canvas where you constantly navigate along two axes (X and Y) and adjust scale, direct zooming with the wheel feels far more intuitive and efficient.

- Holding down Ctrl for long periods of time isn’t comfortable either. After a long day, it causes fatigue and discomfort in my pinky finger, since it constantly needs to remain bent to hold down the Ctrl key.

- Besides the architecture and 3D modeling software I mentioned, everyday tools like Google Maps also use mouse-wheel zoom as standard, reinforcing this expectation among users.

- According to usability best practices (Nielsen’s Heuristics and ISO 9241-110), interfaces should conform to existing standards, minimizing the learning curve and aligning with user expectations.

Another relevant point is considering Fibery’s future mobile app implementation. How will the two-finger pinch gesture behave on mobile devices? This gesture universally means zooming in or out—will Fibery adopt zoom behavior for consistency, or will it scroll vertically as it currently does on desktop? It makes sense to establish consistent zoom behavior across all platforms from the start.

My suggestion for this is straightforward:

- Include an optional setting in Preferences allowing users to activate direct zooming with the mouse wheel.

- This setting would eliminate the need to hold down Ctrl for zoom, while preserving the current behavior by default for users who prefer it.

- A simple zoom-speed slider in settings would also significantly enhance daily usability.

Honestly, this mouse-wheel zoom issue is one of the main points making me question moving permanently from Miro to Fibery, since my workflow is constantly disrupted by having to readjust my habits every time I switch apps.

I believe addressing this would make Fibery significantly more user-friendly and appealing for professionals who already have this zoom behavior firmly established from other software.
