I am wondering if there is a mechanism to enable local file links (i.e. file:// protocol) in the desktop app? This is generally disabled in chrome and you need to install extensions to get it working again. However, I was wondering if the desktop app can enable this feature.

I know it is not best practice to link to local or network files, as they may not be accessible on a different system. However, for teams that still use internal network shares for majority of their work and don’t have their work in the cloud, this is unfortunately a reality and pain point.

Sorry for reviving this request. I was wondering if there was any possibility of providing this feature in the desktop app. It would be very helpful to all of us who are still bound to files on network drives.

I do understand that it would still not be possible to use those links in the web and mobile applications, but that would still be very helpful.

I’m curious how you imagine this.

A URL field supporting drag and drop of files, and clickable?
Or a Files field which doesn’t upload to Fibery and instead links to existing local url?

The former seems to be easier than the latter. But I’m curious as to how you use the local files, and hence how it’d need to look like in Fibery for your use case.

I am actually looking for something more simple: enabling the “file://” protocol within the desktop application (electron). For example: “file:///Q:/Documents/Projects/”.

By default, the “file” protocol is now disabled in all browsers and by extension electron. While you are able to enable this using extensions in some browsers (if you are not restricted by organization rules), the desktop app can’t be patched/extended in that way.

Within my work environment, we routinely used and share links to files on our network drives. I also used to save links to some frequently used local files in various places (including in the browser). In windows, this is now quite easy as you can select files and “Copy as Path”. If we had the ability to add this into URL fields as well as use as target for links in rich text content, that would address my needs.

Hi!

Unfortunately, the answer would be “no”, there will be broken images and links, and thumbnails and previews won’t work. 😢 There is no nice and easy way to implement that, so it’s unlikely to be done, sorry
